Hotel Style Dal Maash (Urad Daal)

Ingredients

  • Dal maash 2 cups
  • Onion 1 big
  • Tomato 1 big
  • Ginger and garlic paste 1 tsp
  • Oil 1/4 cup
  • Cloves (long) 4
  • Salt to taste
  • Red chili powder to taste
  • Turmeric powder 3/4 tsp
  • Cumin powder 1 +1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder 2 tsp
  • Black pepper powder 1/2 tsp
  • Water to cover the dal completely

Garnish

  • Ginger 1 small piece, julienne cut
  • Fresh coriander 1 handful. Chopped
  • Green chilies 4-5
  • Garam masala 1/2 tsp

Preparation

  1. Soak the lentil in water for 1 hour.
  2. Coarsely grind onion and tomato and add to the cooking pot.
  3. Add oil and ginger garlic paste and sauté until raw smell goes off.
  4. Add cloves, salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, black pepper powder and coriander powder.
  5. Sauté for another minute or so.
  6. Wash the soaked lentil with fresh water, drain and add to the pot.
  7. Pour some water (enough to cover the lentil completely.
  8. Cover and cook on medium to low until dal mash is fully cooked. If need be, add some more water while cooking.
  9. Lastly, add garam masala, fresh coriander, green chilies and ginger.
  10. Mix and serve with roti!
  11. Enjoy!
